The Lubavitcher Rebbe meets with former President Moshe Katsav. At the time, Mr. Katsav was Israel's Transportation Minister. The Rebbe tells the Minister to please give a personal message to Prime Minister Shamir that he should not be engaging in negotiations about giving Israel's land. This the Rebbe calls: "Against God and His Torah." Later, it came out that the PM was indeed negotiating about giving land for peace and was not re-elected. Indeed, Mr. Katsav himself despite being appointed to be President of Israel, participated in the infamous forced expulsion of over 20,000 Israelis from their homes and businesses due to just those talks the Rebbe was referring to. He later expressed regret when he was jailed for 7 years over alleged criminal doings, claiming this was punishment from Above for his participating in the expulsion.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe discusses the war of Gog and Magog that will be in the time of Moshiach, in detail. There will be great military conflicts (“Sichs’uch”) between the nations surrounding Israel (also this same idea is brought in the sicha of Achron Shel Pesach in 1970). However the Jewish people and Yerushalaim will be protected from the military conflict. How it impacts us is described in Psalms (Tehillim) chapter 2. There it describes how the enemies of the Jewish people will plan and scheme to take Jerusalem, which the Rebbe defines as the present day: “peace process”, the “two state solution”, which not only targets Aza and Shomron but also Jerusalem. Worse- Even friendly nations towards the land of Israel (Like for example: The USA) will join in this effort. This is the part of the war between Gog and Magog which is the war against G-d and Moshiach. The Rebbe says there, that when we see this happening? It's a sign that Moshaich’s arrival and victory is very close. As one can see from recent events this has been going on, and now it's reaching the climax.

Due to the signing of the Camp David peace agreements by Prime Minister Begin with Egypt in 1978 A war within Israel's Knesset begins as plans to evacuate the city of Yamit are unveiled calling for a revocation of the peace agreement. Instead, on April 23rd, Yamit was evacuated, a city of over 100,000 people in Sinai. At the time of this sicha, debate was raging over the upcoming evacuation. The poor wisdom of signing a clearly one sided agreement which put Israel as the loser of land and gainer of nothing was questioned. Egypt of course moves its military up to the new border. Despite the disadvantages of the agreement and the unfair terms, Israel's minority of peacemakers bull it out and the majority of nay-sayers in the government are ignored and over-ruled. The talks were kept secret until signed and the terms were not subjected to a democratic vote by Israel's citizens a fact that outraged Knesset members and Israelis alike.

May 8 The UN Security Council votes for a resolution calling on Israel to rescind the deportation of the mayors of Hebron and Halhoul. The U.S. abstains. May 25 In an interview in The Washington Post Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia says that if Israel would declare its intention to withdraw from areas occupied in 1967, “Saudi Arabia would do its utmost to bring the Arabs to cooperate and work for a full settlement.” Begin invites Fahd to come to Jerusalem and address the Knesset. June 2: Two West Bank mayors (suspected of complicity in the events of May 2) are injured in bombings. Israel blames the bombings on Jews of an alleged underground. Jews alleged to be the bombers are jailed and tortured until they confess their alleged crime. After the evidence is produced by forced confessions, they are jailed. Meanwhile the crimes of the mayors deported are forgotten while Israel blames the Jewish residents for the Arab crimes citing their living in these areas as "incitement" and justification for the Arab terror.

July 30: Israel's Knesset passes the Jerusalem Law.
Which Reads:
It began as a private member's bill proposed by Geulah Cohen, whose original text stated that "the integrity and unity of greater Jerusalem (Yerushalayim rabati) in its boundaries after the Six-Day War shall not be violated." However, this clause was dropped after the first reading in the Knesset. As the Knesset thus declined to specify boundaries and did not use the words "annexation" or "sovereignty", Ian Lustick writes that "The consensus of legal scholars is that this action added nothing to the legal or administrative circumstance of the city, although, especially at the time, its passage was considered to have political importance and sparked a vigorous protest reaction from the world community." [1] For example, United Nations Security Council Resolution 478,[2] adopted by 14 votes to none, with 1 abstention (United States), declared soon after that the law was "null and void" and "must be rescinded". This resolution called upon member states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city. An amendment in 2000 further specified the jurisdiction of the law, that included East Jerusalem. It actually did not change its range. The amendment also prohibited transfer of authority to a foreign body, for example an international regime.

Text of the Law

Basic Law: Jerusalem, Capital of Israel (unofficial translation)[3]

Jerusalem, Capital of Israel:

1. Jerusalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel. Seat of the President, the Knesset, the Government and the Supreme Court:

2. Jerusalem is the seat of the President of the State, the Knesset, the Government and the Supreme Court.

Protection of Holy Places:

3. The Holy Places shall be protected from desecration and any other violation and from anything likely to violate the freedom of access of the members of the different religions to the places sacred to them or their feelings towards those places.

Development of Jerusalem:

4. (a) The Government shall provide for the development and prosperity of Jerusalem and the well-being of its inhabitants by allocating special funds, including a special annual grant to the Municipality of Jerusalem (Capital City Grant) with the approval of the Finance Committee of the Knesset. (b) Jerusalem shall be given special priority in the activities of the authorities of the State so as to further its development in economic and other matters. (c) The Government shall set up a special body or special bodies for the implementation of this section.

Amendment no. 1 (passed by the Knesset on 27 November 2000):

Area of the jurisdiction of Jerusalem

5. The jurisdiction of Jerusalem includes, as pertaining to this basic law, among others, all of the area that is described in the appendix of the proclamation expanding the borders of municipal Jerusalem beginning the 20th of Sivan 5727 (June 28, 1967), as was given according to the Cities' Ordinance.

Prohibition of the transfer of authority

6. No authority that is stipulated in the law of the State of Israel or of the Jerusalem Municipality may be transferred either permanently or for an allotted period of time to a foreign body, whether political, governmental or to any other similar type of foreign body.

Entrenchment

7. Clauses 5 and 6 shall not be modified except by a Basic Law passed by a majority of the members of the Knesset.

From Sichos in English
Translators Note: The Rebbe Shlita mentioned (note the sichos of the 5th day of Chanuka) his desire to build two new settlements in Israel. He explained that the Israeli government was slowing down the processing of the permits and forms that are necessary to begin such a project. The Rebbe claimed that this delay was intentional and had been caused by his own outspoken statements on the issue of the return of the territories conquered in the Six Day War. He expressed his hope that these questions would be resolved in the future.

English: Sarah Nachshons Story: (Time: 26min) click here: Synopsis: Mrs. Sarah Nachshon tells the story of how she wrote to the Rebbe and the story of how they were camped out in Hadassah Hospital as prinsoners for almost a year until the Israeli government opened the Jewish Hospital building for Jewish settlement in March of 1980.

Historical Background
Sicha said for packed house of "ladies only" on occasion of the Rebbe's mother Chana's yortzeit
15 women and 35 children had been camped out in Hadassah Hospital in Hebron since May of 1979. The Israeli army told them: "You can leave, but not come back". Finally, a Lubavitcher woman, Mrs. Sarah Nachshon wrote to the Lubavitcher Rebbe explaining the situation and asking how long they should stay there and asking a brocha for success. On the 6th of Tishrei, just a few days after the New Year, the Rebbe said a sicha special for women in his shul "770" in Brooklyn, New York in the United States. "A woman writes me from Hebron, part of a group of women and children, who are living as captives in the Jewish city of Hebron" he said crying, "They write me: "How long do we have to stay here"? I don't know what to tell them as the city of Jerusalem has been given away already." The Rebbe goes on to discuss the story of the daughters of Zelofchad whose father died and they had no brothers. In order to inherit a portion of the land, you had to be a boy. They asked and argued with Moshe Rabbaynu who asked G-d what to do. G-d acceded to their request in light of the mesirat nefesh and love they had for the land of Israel. This was the Rebbe's answer. In March, after the murder of 6 young men who came Friday night to be with the captive ladies and children by terrorists, Israel's Knesset by a narrow margin finally okay'd the settlement of the area by Jews. The area had been made off-limits for Jews since 1929 by the British and the rule was kept in force by the new Jewish government in 1948. Finally in March of 1980, Jews were once again allowed to live in Hebron as they had done since Roman times. The Hadassah Hospital was built in 1893 as the first medical facility for Jews with the help of the Chabad residents. In 1929, after over 300 Jews were brutally murdered, the Hospital moved to Jerusalem.

August 9: Israel rejects any idea of PLO participation in the peace negotiations even if it accepts Resolution 242. (although one sees they didn't reject negotiating)

May 17 Likud party wins elections held for the Ninth Knesset. This markes the first loss of power for the Labor Party. Likud forms government after Knesset elections, end of 30 years of Labor rule. Menachem Begin becomes Prime Minister. Syria and Palestinian spokesmen say the upset victory by the rightist Likud bloc in the Israeli national elections means the end of meaningful peace negotiations and the likelihood of another Middle East war.

This Day In History:
November 22: UN General Assembly Resolution 242 is adopted.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 (S/RES/242) was adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council on November 22, 1967, in the aftermath of the Six-Day War. It was adopted under Chapter VI of the UN Charter. The resolution was sponsored by British ambassador Lord Caradon and was one of five drafts under consideration. The non-binding preamble refers to the "inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East in which every State in the area can live in security." Operative Paragraph One "Affirms that the fulfillment of Charter principles requires the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include the application of both the following principles:

(i) Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force." Died: Nazi Doctor Heinrich Schuetz was sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted of war crimes in Munich, West Germany. Dr. Schuetz (Shutz), was a colonel in the SS, was found guilty of injecting bacteria into prisoners imprisoned at the Dachau concentration camp as part of a medical experiment. He and a team of German doctors conducted research on Jewish children and adult prisoners. Studies of tuberculosis were also conducted under the auspices of the German Medical Association. They assessed the efficacy of various drugs in the treatment of "dirty" wounds incurred on the prisoners by German soldiers plus testing of so-called biochemical therapy for malaria and other diseases and maladies.
